Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add a template to my GitHub profile?
Create a new public repository on GitHub with the exact same name as your GitHub username (e.g. if your username is johndoe, create a repository named johndoe), initialized with a README file. Choose a template from our homepage, open the live preview, copy the Markdown, and paste it into that README.md. Commit, and it displays on your profile instantly.
Can you make a template for my specific role?
Yes — we love designing layouts for niche specialties (Game Developer, Cybersecurity, Embedded Engineer, Developer Advocate, etc). Use the form above, select "Request a new template archetype," and tell us about the skills and widgets you'd like to show off.
Is ReadmeDesign really free?
Yes, all templates are entirely free and open-source, forever. No paywalls, no sign-ups, no email list required, and no attribution needed on your profile — though sharing with other developers is always appreciated.
My stats card or streak widget isn't loading. Why?
The most common cause is a leftover placeholder username. Search the template Markdown for your-username or your-github-username and replace it with your exact, case-sensitive GitHub username. If it still doesn't load, confirm your public contribution settings are enabled in your GitHub profile settings.
Can I auto-update parts of my README?
Yes — GitHub Actions can automatically update sections of your README: fetching blog posts via RSS, updating coding hours, showing recent commits, and more. See our step-by-step guide on the blog to set this up without running your own server.
